This is very powerful. 23-24 mins in regarding the events around the deaths and how some may use as an excuse to not exercise, how running may be dangerous. I really liked your comment about how not exercising will cause complications. Very true. Look at my mom, 4 heart attacks and 3 strokes. She’s had a quadruple bypass at age 63 and requires care. All because she wasn’t able to exercise because of her own inner struggles. Very powerful.

Regarding Simon’s comment about cheating. He mentioned about not being able to afford massages, training camps, etc…. Simon wondered if those “luxuries” are considered cheating. The difference in my opinion is that luxuries such as training camps, training at altitude, etc… and wearing flippers is that luxuries are not against the rules. Flippers (please correct me if I’m wrong) are against the rules. Just my 2 cents.

In response to the cheating “debate” from the last couple of episodes: I agree with Simon in that we can’t always stop cheating it will always happen where there are human being in competition, but as far as other people being able to get massages, personal trainers and the top of the line bike, well, that is the game! Most of us can’t afford that stuff, but we run for ourselves, and it will NEVER be an equal playing field! We just do our best enjoy it and the people that cheat are NEVER winners. ever! it is very frustrating to an athlete’s morale. As to the women who were disqualified for “cheating” at the other race for taking water and carrying an ipod, if the rules say not to listen to ipod or take aid between aid stations then don’t! you have to follow the rules, that is the name of the game! be prepared, follow and follow rules and HAVE FUN!

great episode! I had a chance to listen to it today during my tempo run. I was feeling a little like lead today and didin’t think I was going to have a good run, but the episode sped me up and charged me. I like what you had to say about the 3 marathoners who passed away. I know many people, including my fiance, who think that running is “bad” for you. But they aren’t runners! so they don’t know! more people die from being a couch potato than not! Also running can hurt but that is part of life! Running or anything for that matter wouldn’t be interesting or challenging if it didin’t hurt or wasn’t hard once in awhile! that is why I run, that is why I hike, rockclimb, bike, etc because it is interesting! get out there and enjoy this life! you only get to live it once! I grew up most of my life south of the mason-dixon line where winter is a month long and also in places south of the border where winter is a rainy day of 55 degrees so now that I live in Pennsylvania I am a sufferer of “winter blues” and the only way I can make it through is to run my little heart out. Good luck on your training for the Philly and NYC marathons Brandon and Trea (sp?) congrats on an awesome, awesome, inspiring race!!! keep it up peeps!

    Hello Brandon:

What a moving, heartfelt tribute to the three runners who collapsed and died in the Detroit marathon. You cannot believe the idiotic “know it alls”–on the street, in the paper, and on the radio–who explained the tragedy with “I told you so” comments. Absolutely disgusting! As the autopsy report stated, we don’t know what caused it. Further tests in a toxicology lab are being done. Perhaps the saddest part of this situation is that the three men never had a chance to say “goodbye” to their loved ones. People, here, are still stunned about it all.

Hey Brandon! I agree, everyone needs to get out there and do something. With no cartilage in my left knee, I am still swimming, biking, walking and occasionally running. I find a way to stay active and participate in the sport that I enjoy doing. NO excuses! GREAT podcast and thanks for the book! I was wicked excited to have won! I can’t wait to start reading it!
