Well, it is now about a week and a half until the 2009 New York City Marathon and my fellow runners here in the city are buzzing! Ari posted the following comment a couple of weeks ago and I have been waiting until we got a bit closer to marathon Sunday to open Pandora’s Box:
I did a blog post about NY vs. Boston. The reaction was mixed. Check out the article and the comments. [LINK]
Soooooo, while I do have my opinions on the better race, I want to know what you think! Between the New York city Marathon and the Boston Marathon, which is the BETTER race and why? Please leave me a comment! Pandora’s Box opened!
Boston – cause I like Red Sox better than Yankees! Wait… that wasn’t the question…
Oh Brandon, you ask an impossible question. As one who has done both within the past year, I don’t think it’s fair to pick one over the other.
Although I’m slightly biased towards the former because I live here (in NYC), I still think the latter is just special in its own unique way.
Sorry I’m no help today…haha!
I’m from the UK so you would think i would say neither, and go for the London as my Number 1. But as this sunday the 1st of November i’m running my FIRST marathon and its New York. So no matter how bad it is, how bad the weather is or how bad i do, it will be my first and best regardless, and i know it will always be in my heart.

Boston!!! You have to qualify (usually) to get there, so when you do run it, it’s soooo sweet.
Ok, so I can’t vote just yet. I ran Boston in April and it was amazing. I am running NYC on Sunday, so I will be sure to come back and vote! Only 3 days away now. Cheers!
For a UK point of view, telling people you’ve run the New York marathon raises many “cool” responses from runners and non-runners alike but if you’ve run Boston, other runners will be very impressed. Its got more kudos because of the qualifying.
PS. Kev – I’ve run New York and London. Don’t listen to the man Brandon. New York is good but London is amazing. Trust me.
First off let me say I live in NYC and have run the past 3 NYC marathons (including yesterdays). I have also run Boston 2009 and am registered to run Boston 2010. With that being said, and believe me Im trying to be impartial…
The NYC Marathon is a mind-blowing expierence. When you have 8+ million New Yorkers cheering you on as you run through one of the most awesome courses available to runners through a city of this calibur, how can you even question which is “better”. I think the answer is pretty clear right from the beginning…Verazzano Bridge for a start?
Not to take anything away from Boston…but as far as an “expierence” goes…your running through a bunch of pretty New England towns…. wonderful….but not really all that different from the rest of New England.
Right?
While I have not run either, but I do live in NYC, you are looking at it exactly as I do. Boston is nice and does have the history, but as for which is “better” (the one word no one seems to be paying attention to!), I agree!
I just ran NY for my 2nd time. AND my 2nd marathon. So….my only marathon experience is NYC. BUT, I knocked 10 minutes off my PR and qualified for Boston by 6 seconds!! So in April, I will let you know which is “better” NYC will be tough to beat.
