For a UK point of view, telling people you’ve run the New York marathon raises many “cool” responses from runners and non-runners alike but if you’ve run Boston, other runners will be very impressed. Its got more kudos because of the qualifying.
PS. Kev – I’ve run New York and London. Don’t listen to the man Brandon. New York is good but London is amazing. Trust me.
Have you ever heard of Ron Hill. He is a Bristish runner, winner of the Boston Marathon in 1970, 2nd person to break 2:10 and all round good guy (I met him and he was so nice, giving me so much time to talk to him).
This is all impressive but what I find amazing is his streak. He has a running streak where he hasn’t missed a day running since December 1964. He is now 72 and still continues to run at least 1 mile each day. He had a car crash in 93 where he ran with a broken sternum. That is dedication.
We tried to allign ourselves with Euorpe recently and change to metric weight but loads of people (mostly old) complained that they couldn’t order cheese at the deli in grams. So we are stuck using both. My daughters are taught to measure in centimeters but asked their height in feet and inches. Madness.
Rant over.
However, my April mararhon and my first ever ironman in Augsut are going to fill up what little spare time I have.
Its going to be a crazy 12 months but if all goes to plan, I will achieve so much.
Good luck to you in 2010. It is set to be life changing for you.
I agree with you about the Christmas period. I use the extra time to do a little more running than usual. I love running on Christmas day. I try and fit in a half marathon after the kids have opened up their presents. It chills me out and makes Christmas dinner taste even better.
I ran marathon number 7 on Saturday. I did the Gower Cross Country Marathon in Wales. I wasn’t as prepared as I would have wanted but I had done several good long runs so my endurance was ok if my speed was poor. It was serious terrain with lots of hills and uneven paths as well as a couple of sandy beaches. It had rained for four days so it was very very muddy. Because it had been raining so much they had to change the route to 28 miles instead of 26.2. An ultra!!!
It wasn’t raining we when set off but it was raining by mile 15. After that is was so tough. Just plodding along, mile after mile. It was very slippy even in my XC shoes. My knee started to really hurt with 4 miles to go and the last bit took ages. 5 hrs 53 minutes of running in total, 28 miles and 3900 feet of ascent. I was pleased with my performance. It was slow but you can’t compare it to a regular marathon. I was 113th out of 169 which shows I wasn’t half bad. I beat some very fit looking individuals.
My other big news is that I have enterted the UK Ironman which will take place on 1st August 2010. Scary.
To answer your question, no, I haven’t done a tri yet. I plan to do one in the new year as I’m getting a lot of the gear (set suit, goggles etc.) for Christmas presents. I look forward to the email.
I had a fun 10K on Sunday. It was my first run with my brother and his first ever race. He’d never run that far before so did very well to keep the pace up. We have always been competitive and running is the first sport where I’m better. However, he still tried his luck in the last 200 meters and suddenly sprinted off. I was ready and didn’t give an inch.
The picture of us as we approach the line is hilarious. I’m grinning and he’s got such an expression of effort. Brilliant. You can see the picture on my blog.
Thanks,
Simon

Boston – cause I like Red Sox better than Yankees! Wait… that wasn’t the question…
Oh Brandon, you ask an impossible question. As one who has done both within the past year, I don’t think it’s fair to pick one over the other.
Although I’m slightly biased towards the former because I live here (in NYC), I still think the latter is just special in its own unique way.
Sorry I’m no help today…haha!
I’m from the UK so you would think i would say neither, and go for the London as my Number 1. But as this sunday the 1st of November i’m running my FIRST marathon and its New York. So no matter how bad it is, how bad the weather is or how bad i do, it will be my first and best regardless, and i know it will always be in my heart.

Boston!!! You have to qualify (usually) to get there, so when you do run it, it’s soooo sweet.
Ok, so I can’t vote just yet. I ran Boston in April and it was amazing. I am running NYC on Sunday, so I will be sure to come back and vote! Only 3 days away now. Cheers!

First off let me say I live in NYC and have run the past 3 NYC marathons (including yesterdays). I have also run Boston 2009 and am registered to run Boston 2010. With that being said, and believe me Im trying to be impartial…
The NYC Marathon is a mind-blowing expierence. When you have 8+ million New Yorkers cheering you on as you run through one of the most awesome courses available to runners through a city of this calibur, how can you even question which is “better”. I think the answer is pretty clear right from the beginning…Verazzano Bridge for a start?
Not to take anything away from Boston…but as far as an “expierence” goes…your running through a bunch of pretty New England towns…. wonderful….but not really all that different from the rest of New England.
Right?
While I have not run either, but I do live in NYC, you are looking at it exactly as I do. Boston is nice and does have the history, but as for which is “better” (the one word no one seems to be paying attention to!), I agree!
I just ran NY for my 2nd time. AND my 2nd marathon. So….my only marathon experience is NYC. BUT, I knocked 10 minutes off my PR and qualified for Boston by 6 seconds!! So in April, I will let you know which is “better” NYC will be tough to beat.
