I’m wondering if they will eliminate the drafting penalties from Ironman in the future. Drafting in the bike leg of the triathlon at the Olympics was legal in 2008 (which I thought was kind of a bummer), so I’m curious to see if this is a trend we will see. I recently did the swim and bike portions of the Longhorn Ironman, and I never saw a race official the whole time. I really doubt they were enforcing many penalties, except on the elites.

I raced IM FL this past weekend and I witnessed people drafting all the time! Although I was passed by about 15-20 course marshall’s, I never saw them hand out penalties to anyone. This past IM was my 5th (3rd time for FL) and even in the past I have rarely seen penalties handed out for drafting. I believe that the IM is about you finding a way to complete the 140.6 miles, so getting help during the bike section shouldn’t be allowed. Just my opinion.
