What’s wrong with this picture? Well, apparently, the saying on the t-shirt is what’s wrong. Yes Lance is 38 years old, and yes, BFD. However, when this photo was taken, that saying was not on Lance’s shirt. In fact, there was nothing on Lance’s shirt. It was just a plain, blue t-shirt.
Up to now, Lance’s history with Outside Magazine seems to have been a very good one with the seven time Tour de France winner appearing on the cover over ten times. But is this possibly the last time? Yesterday afternoon, Lance addressed the photo on his Twitter with the following:
On top of the falsified photo, perhaps Lance is a little less than thrilled about the blurb on his right: “His Age, New Rival, the Latest Scandal. Is This End For Lance?”
Personally, I think it’s not cool to make it appear as though Lance approved of the saying on the shirt (his historically colorful language notwithstanding). I’m also not a huge fan of Photoshopping in general in publishing, but I understand that it’s a part of the game.
What do you think about all this?
What shocks me is they thought they could get away with it! Since when does Lance Armstrong let people put words in his mouth (or on his shirt)? That was very poor judgement.
My guess is they thought he wouldn’t mind so much. I guess they’ll ask next time!

that little blurb on the right makes Outside seem more like a silly fashion magazine than one dedicated to athletes and their lifestyles. Why didn’t they just add something about improving your sex life too, while they were at it?
I think it emphasizes the big role that social media now plays in keeping companies / brands / individuals authentic and honest. Had this happened 5 years ago Lance’s agent would have placed a po’d phone call to the magazine, they would have apologized, etc., and that might have been the end. Now, Lance’s 2.5 million followers on Twitter, and all the people/followers re-tweeting, know that Outside Magazine did something unethical. Has Outside responded? The only thing I’ll say in Outside’s defence is that perhaps one of Lance’s ‘people’ gave it the go-ahead?
I don’t believe they’ve responded yet, but I will definitely keep an eye out for it. Here’s there official twitter: http://twitter.com/outsidemagazine
BFD!
All magazine covers are “Photoshopped” these days. All of them. Art directors feel like they have a free hand in manipulating the image of any person who agrees to sit for their photographers. This would not raise an eyebrow if it was a fashion magazine, but obviously it’s still questionable for Outside Magazine.
Generally speaking, I think people just assume that the Photoshopped images on magazines are in the form of wrinkles removed or waists made smaller. I was unaware that entire phrases and such could be added to things. As someone said to me earlier, that is some really good work!
