I appreciate the comments. I want to point out that Dr. Lieberman emphasized that his concern is not with competitive runners for whom “improper form” may be the secret to success but the vast majority of people who take to running for the enjoyment of it.
He doesn’t say that you will not get injured if you land mid- or fore-foot or that you will get injured if you don’t, but that the science tells him that most of us are better off avoiding heel-striking. Especially the bashing-the-heel-into-the-ground strike we often see newbies doing, wearing their overbuilt shoes.
As the old saying has it, the race doesn’t always go to the swift. But that’s the way to bet.
Great point. I think that\’s the point though. The vast majority (probably) should try to do what is the science says is right and then, if they find themselves one of those for whom \”improper form\” works, should stick with what truly works. By works I mean does not result in injury and allows long, healthy runs that are hopefully faster.

When: Starting NOW! This is an ongoing contest that will be every month, or until every person on the planet has nice, fresh smelling shoes!
Why: Because Stuffitts are awesome! The folks at Stuffitts are being SUPER generous and I also want to give you guys something that I think is a great addition to any athletes arsenal!
How: On the last podcast episode post of each month (example: Episode 99 on June 28 HERE) entrants should leave a comment (however long you'd like). On the following week's show (the first show of each month) I will draw, by random number generator, one winner! That's it!
