When I went to bed last night, I wondered why I was so fatigued since I had taken an hour nap in the afternoon (something that I can NEVER do and still get to sleep). Upon waking this morning, I found myself feeling like I had been hit by a truck and still extremely fatigued. This morning, I called and spoke with Coach Jeff as well as @RunningLam and my wife. Everyone said that since I was about to have one of the most busy weeks of my life so far, I need to think long term and postpone the show. So, after much consideration and with my desire to bring you a high-energy, entertaining show, I have decided to postpone the 24 hour show for a couple of weeks.
The raffles will remain open so you can continue to enter often! If you have already entered, I will be adding your name to the list so don’t worry, our entry isn’t going anywhere. I will keep my site, Facebook and Twitter updated on the updated schedule and any news about the show. Thank you all so much for understanding!
Please pass this along on Twitter and Facebook so I can get the word out. Thanks all!

Lake Success, N.Y. (June 1, 2011) – Polar (www.polarusa.com), the leader in heart rate monitoring and fitness assessment technologies, today introduced the RCX5. Building on decades of experience, and a heritage of precision excellence in product design and functionality, the RCX5 combines Polar heart rate tracking accuracy with a slew of new features. Ideal for multisport endurance athletes, the RCX5 can accommodate the needs of today’s triathletes who want the best in training intelligence and tracking capabilities. It will be immediately available in “smart black” and will also be sold in “striking red” later this year.
New accessories for the RCX5 include the G5 GPS sensor – an incredibly lightweight and compact sensor which measures speed/pace and distance and provides an online map view of training – as well as the new WearLink®+ Hybrid transmitter, which provides heart rate data even when underwater. Additionally, an enhanced s3+ stride sensor is compatible with the RCX5.
“Triathlons are one of the fastest-growing sport segments in the United States, and we understand better than anyone in the market that multisport athletes demand data, whether they are training for their first regional event or chasing a lifelong professional pursuit,” said Jeff Padovan, President, Polar USA. “The Polar brand has been an established name among elite athletes for more than 30 years, and we are proud of the loyalty and knowledge we’ve built within the ‘tri’ market specifically. The RCX5 is the realization of everything we’ve been hearing that ‘tri’ users require to get to that next level, packaged in a new, sleek design.”
Sport Profiles: Essential for multisport and triathletes, this feature enables users to quickly switch between sports during training. With just a few button presses, this feature quickly adjusts settings to the current sport. It automatically detects any sensors needed, so that no time or training data is lost between swims, rides or runs. Four sport profiles come pre-loaded into the RCX5, and more can be added based on the user’s preferences.
ZoneOptimizer: Knowing how hard to train can be a challenge and it depends on many factors, including physical and mental state, stress, sleep, and previous training. The brand new ZoneOptimizer feature eliminates guesswork by adjusting personal heart rate zones based on a user’s current physiological condition. It guides training at the right intensity, making every session more effective.
Race Pace: The perfect feature for regulating speed and race strategy, Race Pace allows users to
set a target time for a certain distance, and then displays the current pace/speed, as well as how far ahead or behind the user is from the target.
Training Load: This feature within polarpersonaltrainer.com displays a color-coded graph of a user’s cumulative training load, notifying a person when he or she has recovered enough for the next session, and accurately predicting training developments to prevent overtraining. This data also provides intelligence to modify training sessions as necessary.
polarpersonaltrainer.com: Several upgrades have been incorporated into the free online training journal to support the RCX5 users. Users can now create complete endurance training programs for running and cycling, including warm-up, work and cool-down sessions. The training programs can be easily synched to the RCX5 via the DataLink data transfer unit. After each session, it is easy to track progress online over time.
New RCX5 Compatible Accessories:
G5 GPS sensor: The extremely small G5 GPS sensor measures speed/pace and distance and allows users to see their route on the new map view at polarpersonaltrainer.com after a session. Incredibly light (34g) and worn with a soft, flexible armband, the G5 has an 18-hour battery life and can be recharged via micro USB.
s3+ stride sensor: The s3+ comes with a new, firm shoe attachment which guarantees more accurate speed/pace and distance measurement. This small and lightweight (23g) sensor is shock and water resistant, handling even the most demanding runs. By monitoring running cadence and average stride length, s3+ can help improve running technique. The RCX5 can also calculate your Running Index, which scores a run, based on speed and distance data from the GPS or stride sensor. While cycling, users can get speed, distance and cadence measured by adding Polar cycling sensors using W.I.N.D. technology.
WearLink®+ Hybrid transmitter: The RCX5 provides heart rate data even in water with a comfortable, fabric chest transmitter. It transfers data both in 5 kHz and 2.4 GHz.

(Scotts Valley, CA) Giro, the cycling world’s design leader since 1985, has announced the launch of the all-new Selector helmet. Combining a built-in eye shield with a self-adjusting fit system and an adjustable lower tail section that optimizes the helmet to match the rider’s back, the Selector is a revolution in the aero helmet category. It’s also the most aerodynamically efficient helmet available based on Giro’s extensive test data, one that gives measurable real-world performance gains.
“The Selector is the only aero helmet available to consumers that benefits from more than 25 years of experience in designing aerodynamic helmets,” said Giro Senior Brand Manager Eric Richter. “It represents hundreds of hours in the wind tunnel, countless hours spent creating and evaluating models and prototypes, and real-world feedback from top professionals including…TBD. That all comes together to create the ultimate weapon when every split-second counts.”
With the challenge of optimizing helmets to match the body shapes and positions of so many elite
riders, including Lance Armstrong who requires a very specific helmet design to minimize drag, Giro engineers sought to create a helmet that could be customized to fit a wide range of riders and course conditions, without compromising performance. This line of thinking led to the Selector, a helmet that addresses the market with a customizable approach to performance, rather than the traditional “one solution for all” approach.
Giro engineers utilized their unparalleled testing resources to create the sleekest front profile possible. The built-in eye shield’s vents allow cool air into deep channels inside the helmet’s liner to help disperse heat, before sending it out exhaust vents to the rear. And it is at the rear of the helmet where the revolution truly begins. An uninterrupted transition from helmet crown to the rider’s back is one of the biggest factors in aerodynamic efficiency and the Selector is the first helmet to allow tuning of that transition. For the first time, riders can choose between a shorter, 10mm tail section for those with a relatively flat –backed position, or a 45mm tall section for those with a more compact or hunched position. Further optimizing aerodynamics, the Selector utilizes Giro’s new Roc Loc® TT system that self-adjusts, which eliminates the need for access to the system and allows the helmet to be closed at the rear.
The Selector was developed with the same core team of designers and engineers that have collectively helped Giro-sponsored riders to win countless major titles in the last decade, plus 9 of the last 11 Tours de France (confirm). This year, it will be the helmet of choice for riders from Radio Shack, Garmin-Cervelo, Rabobank and Trek-Livestrong U-23.
FACTS ABOUT GIRO’S NEW SELECTOR HELMET
Olympic champion Sammy Wanjiru has passed away. All our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. The world has lost an amazing athlete and true champion.
I think I’ve floated the possibility of this event several times since I got involved in triathlon and it looks like the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) has been on the same wavelength as well. Bloomberg news is reporting that the WTC is in talks with Korff Enterprises, the company that operates the Nautica NYC Triathlon, to bring the 140.6 mile event to New York City.
While the event has been (and continues to be) in the negotiation stage for the better part of seven years, John Korff insists that it’s still a ways off.
The catch to an event of this magnitude being in NYC is, as the article linked below points out, the time factor. Ironman events give competitors 17 hours to complete an event, which would mean a huge amount of the city being blocked off and/or shut down for a big chunk of time. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the 17 hours mark is not a lump amount of time that racers have to complete the course. Races, which typically start at 7 AM, give competitors 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete the 2.4 mile swim portion, until 5:30 PM to complete the 112 mile bike portion and until midnight to complete the marathon portion.
The logistics of a race like this would be a nightmare but if it could be pulled off it is certain to be an epic, marquis event for Ironman.

So the wait is over! Here are some details on the new RCX5 training computer. This is a cutting-edge product ideal for endurance sports, with some exciting new features to coach you in planning, training and analyzing your performance in detail.
Some new features:
ZoneOptimizer: Knowing how hard to train can be a challenge as your condition changes every day depending on a number of factors, including your physical and mental state, stress, sleep, and previous training. The brand new ZoneOptimizer feature in the RCX5 takes out the guesswork by adjusting your personal heart rate zones for every training session based on your current physiological condition. It will guide you to train at the right intensity to get the training effect you want, making your every session more effective.
Sport Specific Training: The RCX5 gives you sport-specific training data based on your personal settings. So the display views, training zones and more can be customized based on your sport. When you are doing brick workouts or racing, you can switch these sport profiles within seconds. Button pressing should be the least of your worries during transition, so we designed the feature along with the wrist unit design/button location to make this as easy as possible.
Swimming & Indoor Workouts: The RCX5 comes with the new WearLink®+ Hybrid transmitter, making it ideal for triathlon and off season training. The transmitter has a dual signal, so it will transmit, display and record heart rate in the water. Also, the WearLink®+ Hybrid transmitter can be used to transmit heart rate to treadmills and other exercise equipment that is Polar ready.
New Sensors: New sensors will also be part of the RCX5 launch!
G5 GPS Sensor: The small G5 GPS sensor is rechargeable via mini USB. We will post a few pictures of this soon, but let us tell you, THIS THING IS SMALL.
s3+ stride sensor: The new s3+ comes with a new, firm shoe attachment which guarantees more accurate running pace and distance measurement.
And of course in the saddle you can get your speed, distance and cadence measured by adding compatible Polar W.I.N.D. cycling sensors.
With the sensor accessories, RCX5 keeps up with you in the water, on the saddle, during your run, and online.
There will also be big upgrades at polarpersonaltrainer.com to support multisport athletes in their training. Here are just a few:
The RCX5 will be available in two colors, the smart black and the striking red, and in four different product sets with different sensors. All black RCX5 sets will be available between May and July. The striking red color design will be available in all four set combinations in late September 2011. All sensors will be available for purchase as separate accessories.

I have just found out that a reader and listener of IronBrandon, Craig F., has passed away in the past couple of days. I do not know any details and as yet his family seems to be keeping details understandably private. The prayers of Danielle and I go out to Craig’s family during this incredibly difficult time.
As the world focuses on the potential thousands of deceased in Japan and across the globe we should always remember that any day could be our last. Love the ones around you and never let them forget it. For Craig and all those in Japan, rest in peace.
Run long, Craig.

I’m a bit confused as to what this means in terms of the UCI and racing in general but, apparently Alberto Contador has been cleared of doping allegations by the Spanish Cycling Federation. Backpedaling (pardon the pun) on their recommendation 3 weeks ago that Contador be suspended for a period of one year, they have now rescinded this ruling and a formal announcement is expected tomorrow.
Contador is set to go race in the Tour of Algavre in Portugal. However, the UCI does have a month to make a final decision on Contadors ability to race.

I may be late to the party on this bit of news, but here it is! Apolo Anton Ohno, an 8-time Olympic medalist, will be running the 2011 New York City Marathon. His training for the marathon will make him take off the next season of short track speed skating, but he stops short of actually saying that he’s retiring from the sport that made him famous. The official announcement of Ohno’s NYC Marathon ambitions is scheduled for this Friday, February 11.
[Full Story: Apolo Ohno goes from short track to NYC marathon]
Last week, the folks at Competitor posted the below video from The Running Event in Austin this past December. In it, Newton Running’s co-founder Danny Abshire shows off the much anticipated zero-drop racing flat from Newton, the MV2.
After seeing the video and having a bit of inside info of my own I contacted some spies who told me the following:
…please note that the MV2 as it appears in the video is no longer accurate. The actual MV2 will look quite different from the one presented at the Austin Running Event last December.
That said, the MV2 in it’s earlier iteration is in house at Newton’s “Running Lab” in Boulder, Colorado. Another reader/spy sent me some pictures of the shoes that will be going out to wear testers as early as this week.
For now, the details that I know are that the shoe is in fact a zero-drop shoe (no height difference form heel to forefoot) and comes in at 5.5 ounces. Also, contrary to the video and to what Competitor first reported, the MV2 will not be out until sometime in Fall 2011. I will be certain to keep everyone up on new developments on what is sure to be a great shoe and one that already has die hard Newton fans drooling.
An unexpected present showed up at Gearist HQ the other day. It came with a letter saying that we (in conjunction with IronBrandon.com) were the lucky recipients of one of only 26 of the packages contents in the world. [Side note: ah flattery!] In the package was a tube about 4 inches high and about an inch in diameter. I know what you’re thinking, “Awesome, a tube!” but wait, there’s more!
Inside the awesome plastic tube was an as yet not released product from the folks at GU Energy Labs, GU Brew Electrolyte Tablets. These little discs of sweat fighting goodness are yet another tool in the ever expanding arsenal of one of the best known and loved names in endurance nutrition.
If you’re familiar with GU Electrolyte Brew in powder form then this won’t be anything terribly new to you. The object is to bring a more convenient delivery system to the electrolyte balancing Brew that you’ve come to know and love. The tube I received is the Lemon Lime flavor. Each tablet contains 320 mg of sodium and 55 mg of potassium, giving a balance of electrolytes rather than just heaps of salt. They are actually quite tasty and mild enough to be completely palatable during long distance races. We will have a full review in the coming weeks, but for now, here is the full statement from GU Energy Labs.
Berkeley, CA – GU Energy Labs, creators of the original sports energy gel, today announced the introduction of GU Brew Electrolyte Tablets – an important addition to their innovative line of nutrition for athletes.
Brew Electrolyte Tables are specifically designed to provide athletes the electrolytes they need to excel on their longest workouts. The effervescent tablets allow the body to retain optimal electrolyte balance without providing unneeded calories. The tablets are also a convenient alternative to carrying bulky powders or additional bottles when embarking on extended workouts.
Each naturally flavored and naturally sweetened tablet provides a careful balance of sodium (320 mg) and potassium (55 mg), for optimal hydration and functional simplicity. The balanced sweetness is derived from Stevia leaf, and yields only ten calories per serving.
Simply put, Brew Electrolyte Tablets are an important new product for athletes intent on maximizing their performance.
“The introduction of Brew Electrolyte Tablets offers GU another avenue to provide easily accessible endurance hydration to athletes who demand premium performance offerings,” said GU Energy Labs President Brian Vaughan, “The proprietary formula for Brew Electrolyte Tablets allows athletes to efficiently hydrate and perform at a higher intensity for a longer period of time.”
GU energy products have long added to the competitive success of world-class endurance athletes including Ironman World Champions Craig Alexander and Mirinda Carfrae, as well as Melanie McQuaid, Conrad Stoltz and Michellie Jones.
Brew Electrolyte Tablets will be initially available in Orange, Lemon Lime and Peach Tea flavors. Each 4.6-gram tablet will contain ten calories. The retail price point will be $6.50 per twelve-serving tube. It will be released to specialty run, bike and outdoor specialty retailers in March, 2011.

After a very public doping scandal following the 2010 Tour de France, Alberto Contador has officially been stripped of his title and suspended from competitive cycling for one year. Since being provisionally suspended by the UCI this past August, the Contador case has been in a kind of limbo while the cycling powers that be decided what course of action to take.
Contador’s suspension is the result of testing positive for trace amounts of clenbuterol, which is used to promote muscle gain at the same time as weight loss. Contador maintains his innocence saying that the chemical, which is also used in cattle, showed in his system as a result of eating tainted meat.
Contador has ten days to present evidence and appeal the decision.

Regardless of his knee situation, Lance will be riding in the Tour Down Under (January 16-23) which has has said will likely be his last professional cycling race outside the US.
Hopefully the layoff from running won’t last too long for Lance since his long time coach, Chris Carmichael has already said that the seven time Tour de France Champion will indee be toeing the line at the 2011 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii in October. I know that I’d certainly like to see what Lance can do in the triathlon world and based on all the buzz, I’m far from alone!

Runner’s World reported yesterday (link below) that Kara Goucher has chosen the 2011 Boston Marathon to be her first marathon following the birth of her first child, colt this past September. From what she says in the RW article, the 2009 Boston Marathon 3rd place finisher can’t think of a better place to make her return. [LINK]
Prior to Boston, however, Kara has her eye set on some other goals. In 2009 she won the Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon beating ALL other comers, male and female alike. Next year, when she heads to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Half Marathon on January 16, she’s got someone specific in her sights. Mario Fraioli from competitor.com has made it clear that he wants to beat Kara. So, in true badass fashion, Kara wants to beat him! Should be a great race! [LINK]

I know this is WAY off topic (though I guess I could claim it’s sort of relevant since both Howard’s wife Beth and Robin Quivers have both run the NYC Marathon) but as a huge Stern fan I thought it bore mentioning!
How you can be an runner, cyclist, triathlete, hiker, kayaker, climber, hunter, (and on and on) and not have a Road ID is beyond me. Road ID is probably the single most affordable way to keep yourself safe while out and about.
Road ID was born in 1999 out the basement of Mike Wimmer by his son Edward Wimmer. For many of us, Road ID has become one of those things that goes on as regularly as our socks and their testimonials page is proof of the incredible difference that it can make.
Road ID’s come in six (6) different models and a variety of colors:
The model that I’m currently wearing is the Wrist ID Elite. The band is made from a rubberized material and sports a watch-style buckle. It is easily adjustable to any size wrist and even though it is at the top end of the Road ID price range it only comes in at a ridiculously low $29.99!
Also, for an additional $10 a year you can use Road ID’s interactive ID. This service allows you to go to an online page and enter an intensely detailed amount of information (Blood type, existing conditions, etc.) rather that just phone numbers and such. The information is available to paramedics and emergency personnel by calling a toll free number or visiting a secure website and presenting your serial number and pin which are hidden on the back of the ID.
On top of the great product that Road ID makes, their customer service is amazing. When I purchased my first Road ID, the Ankle ID, the stitching on the strap pulled out a bit within a month of having it. I emailed the Road ID customer support with my problem and the outcome left me speechless. Not even five minutes after sending them my email I got a UPS shipping notification in my inbox telling me that Road ID was sending me something. About two minute after that I got an email from Road ID telling me that they were sorry for the problem and that a new strap was on the way. INCREDIBLE!
There’s a very good reason that this is on our Gear of the Year list and I would not be surprised if it makes it on all of our “best of” lists. It is a cheap and easy thing that could save your life. If you don’t have one, go buy a Road ID now! If you have a loved one who doesn’t have one, it sure would look nice in their stocking!
11.16.2010– Danny Abshire, the co-founder and chief technical officer of Newton Running, has authored a new book titled Natural Running: The Simple Path to Stronger, Healthier Running. It is now available for online order just in time for the holiday gift-giving season.
“This is the single most important resource for people who want to enjoy running as nature intended while protecting themselves from unnatural surfaces,” says Abshire. “The book will teach you to run the barefoot way—with shoes—and become a more efficient, stronger and healthier runner.”
Danny Abshire is a passionate, lifelong runner who has spent 10 years designing and refining Newton Running shoes. As a longtime running form coach and injury expert, he has worked closely with thousands of athletes, from beginners to Olympic elites, helping them improve their running form and technique.
“Danny has worked with some of the best runners and triathletes in the history of endurance sports,” says Craig Alexander, two-time Ironman World Champion. “Just speaking to him will make you a better runner.”
In Natural Running, Abshire explains the posture, arm carriage, cadence, and land-lever-lift foot positioning that mimic the barefoot running style. Runners transition from heel striking to a midfoot or forefoot strike, which studies show is how the body evolved to run. So that runners can relearn this more natural running gait, Abshire offers an 8-week transition plan, complete with a tool kit of strength and form drills that build and maintain the musculature required for natural running.
In an absolutely shocking announcement today, Haile Gebrselassie announced his retirement from running (it seems). This follows a disappointing debut in the ING New York City Marathon which saw Geb drop out of the race due to a knee injury.

Alexander will be competing for his third straight World Championship Ironman title next week in Kona, Hawaii.
“Craig has been an amazing ambassador for our brand and he’s an important part of our product development team,” says Danny Abshire, Newton Running co-founder and chief technical officer. “He has near-perfect running form and he provides us with terrific feedback to help us continually refine our designs and develop new technologies.”
Alexander, who spends half the year in his native Australia and the other half in Boulder, has been a professional triathlete for more than ten years. After what has seemed like an eternity for many of us die-hard Newton Running fans, the much heralded trail shoe has finally landed in the Newton store for pre-order! I spoke with Sir Isaac a tiny bit today and got some of the skinny on the shoes:
“Closed mesh, PU frame above the EVA for additional support and
protection, gusseted tongue, more supportive strapping, reinforced toe
cap.”
I can’t WAIT to try out these new shoes and get them nice and dirty on any trail I can find! When I do get some on my feet, you can be certain that I will give those of you on the fence about buying some for yourself a detailed rundown. For those of you that can’t wait, click the picture below!

Hey there guys! I am so excited to share some news with you all. Much has been made over the past year of what exactly defines ‘good’ running for and/or technique. Many, like myself, believe in allowing your body to do what it is meant to do naturally rather than allowing an overbuilt, over-cushioned shoe get in the way. With all that said, there is an awesome clinic on natural running form coming to New York City on June 15! See you there! Here are the details:
What: Natural Running Form Clinic with Newton Running
When: Tues., June 15 at 6:30 pm
Where: Meet at The Boat House, Central Park NYC (See map below)
Why: Join Newton Running for a free, open to the public event featuring
Newton’s co-founder and running form expert Danny Abshire, as well as
Newton’s R&D/Education Director and adventure racing world champ Ian
Adamson. Danny and Ian will lead a clinic to demonstrate how proper running
form can improve speed and efficiency, and decrease the risk of injury.
*NOTE* Do not feel any pressure to be a Newton wearer in coming to this clinic! This is for ALL runners who want to improve their form and efficiency.

I am so excited about my upcoming interview with the one and only Craig Alexander! The reigning King of Kona, defending his 2008 win on the big island in 2009, Crowie has been an inspiration to me and to many. His poise during grueling races, overcoming what he has called a “bad day” to win his second world championship, drives me to become a more complete racer.
My interview with Crowie will take place this coming Monday night at 9:30 PM EST, after I record my regular weekly show. I will do my best to broadcast the interview live HERE, but it will also appear on an upcoming episode of my show.
If you have any questions you would like me to ask Crowie, please send them to me at: info@ironbrandon.com and I will do my best to get them on the air.
Hey there everyone! Come join in the live show tonight at 8 PM EST! I hope to be taking live calls for the show (see the phone number to the right).
I wanted to mention a new race coming up in California that is an absolutely perfect place for a weekend getaway with an awesome half marathon thrown in for good measure! The Salinas Valley Half Marathon takes you through the vineyards and near Monterey Bay with a scenic point-to-point course.
I’ll be posting more this race soon, but I wanted to tell you NOW that I’ve got a $5 discount code for registration right now! Click the link below to the registration page and use the discount code: “IronBrandon” and sign up now!

Honey Stinger, the manufacturer of honey-based nutritional foods, announces a partnership with professional cyclist Lance Armstrong. In addition to future product development and endorsement of Honey Stinger energy gels, bars and organic chews, Armstrong becomes part of the ownership team in the Steamboat Springs-based company.
“I first tried Honey Stinger products during a mountain bike race in Colorado,” says Armstrong. “I was impressed with the great taste and energy they provided. Honey Stinger works for me in training and racing because you want to eat them and they work. I like the whole team – they understand what athletes need and they’re great to work with. I’m excited to be part of the Stinger team and work with them on expanding the products and business.
Armstrong first met Len Zanni, Honey Stinger’s marketing director, when they teamed up to race the 12 Hours of Snowmass mountain bike race outside Aspen in 2008. The foundation for a new business partnership was hatched over the course of long bike rides and get-togethers with company leaders.
Bill Gamber, an athlete/ entrepreneur, teamed up with his father William, a honey industry veteran, Bob Stahl, a food product developer, and John Miller, a professional beekeeper, to found Honey Stinger in 2002. Today, the company produces over 20 honey-based energy products that are distributed internationally at specialty sporting goods retailers and natural food grocers.
“We’re thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to work with an athlete of Lance’s stature. Beyond his athletic achievements, Lance is an inspiration and a leader in the fight against cancer,” states Bill Gamber. “Our relationship with Lance comes at a time when Honey Stinger is riding a wave of momentum and this partnership is a major step for our brand.”
About Honey Stinger Located in Steamboat Springs, Colo., Honey Stinger makes convenient, nutritious and great tasting honey-based foods including energy bars, gels and organic chews. Honey Stinger fuels some of the county’s top cyclists, runners, triathletes and teams including Tinker Juarez, Jeremiah Bishop, Katie Compton, the Giant Mountain Bike team and the Trek Livestrong U23 cycling team. NEW YORK — A knee injury has forced 2009 ING New York City Marathon champion Meb Keflezighi to withdraw from next week’s NYC Half-Marathon, it was announced today by New York Road Runners officials.
The NYC Half-Marathon on Sunday, March 21, is the richest half-marathon in the United States, with a prize purse of $100,000. The race boasts a men’s field led by marathon world record-holder Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia, two-time ING New York City Marathon winner Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil, and United States Olympians Anthony Famiglietti and Abdi Abdirahman. The women’s field features 2004 Olympic marathon bronze medalist Deena Kastor of the United States and 2009 London Marathon runner-up Mara Yamauchi of Great Britain.
“Due to a setback in my training a few weeks ago, I will not be prepared to compete in the NYC Half-Marathon,” Keflezighi said in a statement to NYRR officials. “The New York Road Runners have assembled a great field once again, and I was looking forward to being a top contender. But I developed soreness on my left knee that required me to take several days off and cut back on mileage for a few weeks. Since I lost most of the build-up phase of my marathon training in February, I will have to pass on a tune-up race and focus my time on preparing for the Boston Marathon [next month].”
Keflezighi has not raced since his historic victory last November, when he became the first American winner in New York since 1982, when Alberto Salazar won the last of his three consecutive titles.

Continuing the surge of athletes joining the team this year, Hydrapak announces the latest addition to their ultra running family: 2009 TransRockies Women’s Champion Devon Crosby-Helms
“Joining the Hydrapak team was an easy decision,” says Devon Crosby-Helms. “I believe in the products. For me, the Gel-bots and Soft Flasks are an absolute part of my essentials now. I am able to stay on top of my nutrition and hydration needs easily, without having to fuss with wrappers or packages. Using Gel-bots and Soft Flasks saves me minutes and seconds in getting my nutrition in while racing. That may not seem like a lot, but during 50 and 100 mile races it can make a huge difference. To me, the details matter and Hydrapak covers two of the most important, hydration and nutrition.”
“Hydrapak provides ultrarunners an edge by providing the newest and most innovative products for a sport where efficiency matters” said Jim Vernon, Team Manager at Hydrapak. “With Devon supporting our mission, we have another highly regarded athlete, with extensive nutritional expertise backing up strong performances, spreading the good word.”
After bursting on the Ultra scene in ’07 with many impressive finishes, including several course records, Devon has continued to excel and is now recognized among the world’s top ultra distance runners. In 2009, she held the ultra running world on the edge of their seats as she and her running partner, Caitlin Smith, battled seasoned veterans to win the Gore-Tex Challenge Stage Race through Colorado. She then went on to crush course records in several races including The JFK 50, the oldest and largest Ultra race in the country.
Devon’s upcoming schedule includes: the Napa Valley Marathon, March 7th, Lake Sonoma 50 M, March 27th, American River 50 M, April 10th, Big Sur Marathon, April 25th, Ice Age Trail 50 M, May 8th and the Western States 100 M, June 26th.

Moment Sporting Events has just announced the date–September 18, 2010—for the San Diego Triathlon Classic. The race, San Diego’s original USAT sanctioned Olympic triathlon, is now open for registration (www.sandiegotriathlonclassic.com).
“The San Diego Triathlon Classic has gained recognition for its spectator-friendly course that winds through some of San Diego’s most precious historic landmarks,” said JT Lyons, president of Moment Sporting Events. “The scenic, yet challenging nature of this premier event has attracted those that simply enjoy the fun and purity of the sport as well as numerous top age groupers and elite triathletes.”
Lyons added that the company moved the event from its original mid-October date to mid-September to allow those competing at the Ford Ironman World Championships to have one more race option “a final tune-up” before heading off to Hawaii.
The San Diego Triathlon Classic will begin and end on the water’s edge at Liberty Station in the newly renovated historic NTC Park. The 1.5K calm water swim is in a protected estuary of San Diego bay. The bike course (40k) travels through Cabrillo National Park, enjoying spectacular views of Mexico, downtown San Diego and the Pacific. The two-loop, fast and flat, 10k run winds along the waterfront in NTC Park, passing the USS recruit.
“We created the San Diego Triathlon Classic course with both the athlete and the spectator in mind,” said Lyons. “All can enjoy the beautiful views of the downtown skyline, historic landmarks and the San Diego Bay. There is a children’s playground, additional park space and shopping just steps away from the start/finish area.”
Race features include participant t-shirts, a unique finisher medal, goodie bags, five-split timing, gourmet post-race food and a microbrew garden. The travel friendly San Diego Triathlon Classic is minutes from the San Diego International Airport. Many restaurants are within walking distance and hotels are just a step away from the start/finish line.
The public is encouraged to watch the race and attend the free two-day Fitness expo Friday, September 17th and Saturday September 18th. The expo will showcase the finest in triathlon-related coaching, nutrition, bicycles, wheels, apparel, and more.
Interested race participants are encouraged to register early as space is limited. To register online, or for more information, including photos and accolades from last year’s race, visit: www.sandiegotriathlonclassic.com.
